An Associated Press feature by Colleen Newvine caught our attention: celebrities are becoming far more candid about menopause, a stage of life that has rarely been discussed openly.

The article notes that while pop culture is full of puberty stories, the “reverse puberty” women experience in midlife has long been ignored. That is changing — Michelle Obama has spoken publicly about taking hormone replacement therapy, Drew Barrymore experienced her first hot flash live on her talk show, and Oprah Winfrey convened a panel of celebrities and doctors to discuss menopause openly.

Physicians quoted in the piece welcome the more open conversation while urging caution: women should consider where their medical advice comes from, since some celebrity advocates are also selling menopause products or services. Gynecologist and author Jen Gunter warns against medical advice from people without training to dispense it, and OB-GYN Mary Claire Haver lists red flags for “snake oil” products — claims without supporting medical evidence, no peer review, emotional manipulation, and celebrity endorsements.

The experts interviewed agree on the upside: open conversation helps women recognize that symptoms like hot flashes, insomnia, brain fog and mood changes beginning in perimenopause are a normal season of life, not a personal failing — and that effective treatments are available. As psychiatrist Julie Holland put it, this is a “zeitgeist tipping point” for destigmatizing women’s hormonal health.

Our takeaway for our patients: you don’t need a celebrity panel to get answers. If you are navigating perimenopause or menopause symptoms, talk with a board-certified GYN provider who knows your health history.
