Kimberly Harris, FNP
"I sought out Gynecology Specialists because I was having chronic pain from what I thought was just vaginal infections that weren't clearing up. It seemed that I always had the same symptoms of vulvar burning, redness, a raw feeling, vaginal pain during and after sexual intercourse, and bladder pain (not only during urination, but when the bladder filled). I knew something was wrong because I'd never had these problems before.
"Prior to finding their GYN clinic, I sought the help of an Internist, an OB/GYN, and an Urologist. The OB/GYN was always too busy birthing babies to fit me in when I was having symptoms even though that is when I was told to call. The Internist wouldn't listen to what I'd been putting up with, put me down, and told me it was "all in my head". The Urologist ran tests and did a procedure at the hospital, but was still left without a diagnosis even though Interstitial Cystitis was suspected.
"Luckily I found Gynecology Specialists. I liked the fact that they solely took GYN patients, which made it easy to get an appointment when I was having flare-ups of the symptoms. Kim Harris took a very active interest in helping me. I really appreciated her candidness, her ability to listen, and her willingness to seek out the cause(s) for my symptoms.
"She is the one who diagnosed me with Interstitial Cystitis, an extremely painful and sometimes debilitating bladder disease.
"Kim has helped me in several ways. She put names to my symptoms, taught me the particulars about my anatomy, and did enough tests and exams to diagnose me. Even though getting the diagnoses was very upsetting, it was also a relief because then we could march down the road of treatments.
"Kim’s great qualities are many. She is a very good listener. When I am talking, she listens intently without interrupting and does not allow distractions or the pressure of her patient schedule to get in the way.
"She is also very compassionate. Kim really ‘gets’ what it is like to feel physical pain all the time in places nobody should, or wants, to hurt. She understands how GYN health problems can negatively impact the patient's self-esteem, body image, libido, relationship/marriage, work, and general quality of life.
"Kim is a very knowledgeable NP, yet she is always seeking new information and new education. She is not the least bit egotistical, and is willing to do whatever it takes to find an answer to explain bothersome symptoms. She is also very welcoming of questions, and doesn't get upset if you bring in your own thoughts from research you've done. As a matter of fact, she embraces the belief that the patient knows their own body best, and that they should be their own best advocate for their health care."
